🔒 Privacy Policy

Power Trace is a fully local energy monitoring application. It is not a web service, and it does not have servers operated by the developer that receive, store, or process your data. This policy explains what data the software touches, where it goes, and what you control.

This section is about the application. The developer of Power Trace does not collect, receive, or have access to any of the following through the software:

• Energy, power, voltage, current, or billing readings from your device
• Your Tuya credentials, device identifiers, or local keys
• Usage analytics, crash reports, or telemetry of any kind
• Your location or network configuration

There is no analytics SDK, crash reporter, or usage tracking built into the application. The one outbound request it makes is a daily check for a newer version, which sends nothing about you and can be switched off — see Update Checks below. The website getpowertrace.com is a separate matter and is covered further down.

All readings collected from your Tuya-compatible relay are written to a local SQLite database (energymonitor.db) on the same machine that runs the collector and API. This file stays on your disk unless you copy, back up, or move it yourself. Configuration (config.yaml) and analysis rules (rules.yaml) are likewise stored as plain local files.

Tuya IoT Platform. To read data from your relay, Power Trace communicates directly with Tuya's cloud API and/or your device over your local network, using credentials you register and control. This exchange is governed by Tuya's own privacy policy, not by Power Trace or its developer.

Tailscale. Remote access is an optional, client-side feature in Settings. If enabled, it connects through your own Tailscale account and network. The developer has no visibility into this traffic or your Tailscale configuration.

The API binds to your local network so the dashboard can be reached from other devices on the same network (or via Tailscale, if configured). Your measurements never leave your network: no server operated by the developer receives, stores, or processes them. The single exception to outbound traffic is the daily update check described in the next section, which carries no data about you or your device.

Once a day, Power Trace fetches a small static file from getpowertrace.com to find out whether a newer version has been released. This is the only request the application ever makes to a server operated by the developer.

What is sent. Nothing beyond an ordinary web request: the version number you are running, in the browser-style identification header. No readings, no device identifiers, no configuration, no installation ID, no counter of any kind. The request is identical for every user running the same version, so it cannot distinguish one installation from another.

What is received. A short file listing the latest version number and a link to the download page. Nothing is downloaded, installed, or changed automatically — the application only shows a notice, and any update is something you choose to install yourself.

What the server sees. As with any request to any website, the web server receives the IP address the request comes from, and it appears in standard hosting access logs. The developer does not link these entries to anything, and the visitor-counter service described below is not involved.

Everything above describes the Power Trace application. The website you are reading this on, getpowertrace.com, is a separate thing and does record a small amount of visit data.

Visitor counter. The site uses Extreme Tracking, a third-party statistics service. When you load a page, it records your IP address, approximate location derived from it, referring page, browser and operating system, screen size, and the time of the visit. It may set a cookie to tell repeat visits from new ones. This data is held by Extreme Tracking under its own privacy policy; the developer sees only aggregate visit statistics and does not use them to identify anyone.

Server logs. As with any website, the hosting provider records standard access logs, which include IP addresses.

Contact form. Messages you send through the contact page are delivered by e-mail and include what you type plus any file you attach. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which is governed by Google's privacy policy.

Language preference. If you pick a language from the switcher in the navigation bar, the site stores a cookie named pt_lang containing nothing but that language code. It lasts a year, is readable only by getpowertrace.com, and is never used for analytics or shared with anyone. Its only purpose is to stop the site hinting that a translation exists once you have made your choice — which page you see is decided by the address you visit, never by the cookie. Your browser's language setting is read when a page loads, purely to decide whether to show that hint, and is not stored. Deleting the cookie in your browser resets this.

Power Trace is a technical monitoring tool not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, regardless of age.

If this policy changes, an updated version will be published with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use of the software after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
